Dokdo Security Police, guardians of Dokdo Island
The most important basis for proving that Dokdo is the sovereign territory of Korea is the fact that it is under the effective control of the Korean government - in other words, Dokdo is controlled by the Korean government with Koreans inhabiting the Island. In particular, the Dokdo Security Police plays the most important role in protecting the Island by monitoring Japanese patrol vessels invading Korean territorial waters around the clock.

History of the Dokdo Security Police
The Korean National Police Agency established the Dokdo Security Police in July 1954, and took over guard duties of the Island from the Dokdo Volunteer Garrison. In 1996, the Dokdo Security Police and the 318th Combat Police Unit were merged to form the Ulleungdo Dokdo Coast Guard, which continues to carry out maritime border operations for both Ulleungdo and Dokdo to this very day.
Activities of the Dokdo Security Police
The Ulleungdo Dokdo Coast Guard consists of two regional platoons tasked with guarding Ulleungdo, and the Dokdo Security Police tasked with guarding Dokdo. The three platoons serve monthly rotations to patrol and protect Dokdo Island throughout the year. The Dokdo Security Police maintains major facilities to protect Dokdo and uses radar as well as other observation equipment to protect Korea’s territorial waters.
